Wood Type Display

Nineteenth-century poster type in mixed faces and sizes, filling the sheet line by line.

What it does

The letterpress playbill set whatever wood type was in the shop, so a single poster mixes fat face, slab, condensed and shadowed types across lines of different depths, each line stretched or squeezed to fill the measure exactly. Hierarchy comes from size and weight alone. Wood type prints unevenly because the end grain wears, giving broken edges and patchy solids, which is the character everything digital tries and fails to fake.

Every line set in a different wood type, fat face, slab serif, condensed and shadowed mixed freely, each line stretched or condensed to fill the full measure exactly. Rules between sections.
