What it does
Herb Lubalin's Mother and Child logotype and the Fletcher/Forbes/Gill work of the 1960s rely on a single dominant element with everything subordinate. The ratio has to be decisive: two sizes close together look indecisive, whereas a headline at ten times the body reads as intent. The dominant element must be able to carry the meaning alone, because most readers will take only that. It fails when the big word is generic, since scale amplifies whatever is there, including emptiness.
