What it does

Lubalin, Tom Geismar and the Pentagram tradition treat the word itself as the picture. The discipline is that the idea has to survive being described in a sentence, and that only one move is allowed: a single ligature, a substituted counter, one rotated character. Two ideas in one mark cancel each other. Robert Brownjohn's Obsession and Fantasy poster and Lubalin's Families logotype are the standards. It fails when the pun is decorative rather than structural to the meaning.

A typographic mark for [Subject] where the letterforms alone carry the meaning, with no illustration. Exactly one structural move: a single ligature, one substituted counter, or one rotated character that changes what the word depicts.
