What it does

Koloman Moser, Alfred Roller and the Ver Sacrum magazine from 1897 built a style of squared-off ornament, dense repeating pattern and hand-drawn capitals set in strict rectangular panels. It differs from French Art Nouveau by being rectilinear rather than whiplash: the curve is disciplined into a grid. Klimt's gold ground and the Wiener Werkstätte's chequer motif belong to it. Roller's poster lettering is a direct ancestor of Wes Wilson's sixty years later.
