Art Nouveau Lettering

Art Nouveau Lettering example frame

Letterforms drawn as plant growth, filling their space rather than sitting on a baseline.

What it does

Alphonse Mucha's Paris theatre posters and Alfred Roller's Vienna Secession work treat the letter as an organic shape that grows to fit the panel it occupies. Strokes swell and taper like stems, counters close into leaf shapes, and the whole block of text is contained in a decorative cartouche. It is drawn, not set, so no two instances of a letter match. This is the direct ancestor of the Fillmore posters sixty years later, which is why the two read as related despite the gap.

The prompt

An Art Nouveau poster for [Subject]. Hand-drawn lettering whose strokes swell and taper like plant stems, counters closing into leaf shapes, letters varying in width to fill the panel rather than sitting evenly on a baseline. Whole text block contained within an ornamental cartouche of whiplash curves. Muted secondary palette, sage, ochre and dusty rose with black outline. Stone lithography with visible crayon texture.

Replace [Subject] with what you are shooting. Everything else is deliberate: the gear, stock and lighting are what push a generator towards this look.
