What it does

The Hochschule für Gestaltung at Ulm, 1953 to 1968, pushed beyond the Bauhaus toward semiotics, systems theory and mathematics, with Tomás Maldonado and Otl Aicher central. Output is deliberately impersonal: the designer's taste is treated as interference. Braun's product graphics under Dieter Rams belong to the same programme. The result is austere, and its weakness is that it has no vocabulary for pleasure.
