Randomly placed micro-dots of equal size, so there is no screen angle and no rosette.

What it does

Also called FM screening. Instead of varying dot size on a fixed grid, stochastic screening places same-size micro-dots at varying density, so there is no screen angle, no rosette and no moiré when photographing patterned subjects like fabric. It holds far finer detail than conventional AM halftone but is unforgiving on press because tiny dots gain unpredictably. The visual signature is a fine even grain rather than any pattern.
