Photogravure
Continuous-tone intaglio with a fine aquatint grain instead of a halftone dot.
What it does
Karl Klic's process transfers a photograph to a copper plate through a carbon tissue, giving cells of varying depth so ink volume varies continuously. There is no halftone dot, only a fine random aquatint grain, and the tonal scale is longer than any relief process. Stieglitz printed Camera Work in gravure precisely because it held delicate highlight and shadow that letterpress halftone destroyed.
