Mezzotint

Working from black to light by burnishing a roughened plate, giving unmatched dark tone.

What it does

The plate is first roughened all over with a rocker so it would print solid black, then the artist burnishes areas smooth to release light. It is the only intaglio process that works subtractively from dark, which is why eighteenth-century portrait reproduction favoured it and why the blacks are richer than any other print method. Highlights are limited and hard-won, so composition tends toward a lit passage emerging from deep shadow.
