Intaglio Engraving

Line cut into metal, ink pulled from below the surface, giving raised ink and a plate mark.

What it does

The banknote and the stock certificate use intaglio because it is hard to forge and because the ink sits physically raised on the paper. Tone is built from engraved line alone: cross-hatching, stipple and swelled line that thickens where the burin cut deeper. The plate is smaller than the sheet, so a debossed plate mark frames the image. There is no halftone dot anywhere, which is the immediate tell that separates a real engraving from a scan of one.
