Polish Poster School

Polish Poster School example frame

Painted metaphor instead of the product, because there was nothing to sell.

What it does

From the 1950s Henryk Tomaszewski, Jan Lenica and Roman Cieslewicz made film and theatre posters in a state economy where advertising had no commercial function. Freed from selling, the poster became an interpretation: a hand-painted metaphor, often surreal or grotesque, with hand-lettered titles integrated into the image. Nothing is literal. The result is closer to a print than an advert and remains the strongest argument that constraint produces invention.

The prompt

A Polish School theatre poster for [Subject]. A single painted surreal metaphor standing in for the subject rather than depicting it literally, hand-painted in gouache with visible brushwork and uneven edges. Hand-lettered title integrated into the painted image, not set in type. Muted palette with one shocking accent. Offset printed from painted artwork on matte stock.

Replace [Subject] with what you are shooting. Everything else is deliberate: the gear, stock and lighting are what push a generator towards this look.
