What it does

Matisse's late gouaches découpées and Eric Carle's picture books both build image from painted paper cut and layered. The materiality does the work: a torn edge shows the paper's white core, a cut edge is clean, and each layer casts a small real shadow onto the one beneath. Colour is limited to what was painted in advance. Digital imitations usually fail by giving every edge the same treatment and forgetting the shadow.
