Marbled Paper

Pigment floated on size and combed into pattern, then lifted onto paper in one pass.

What it does

Colours are dropped onto a thickened water bath, drawn into patterns with a stylus or comb, and the paper laid on to lift the image. Traditional patterns have names and rules: nonpareil, Spanish wave, peacock. No two sheets are identical, and the pattern has no repeat, which is how a real marbled endpaper is distinguished from a printed imitation. The veining is fine and continuous with no visible edge.
