Gum Bichromate

Hand-coated pigment prints built in layers, closer to watercolour than to photography.

What it does

The Pictorialists around 1900, Robert Demachy and Heinrich Kühn among them, coated paper with gum arabic, dichromate and pigment, exposed by contact, then developed in water, sometimes brushing the image to alter it. Multiple coatings build tone and colour. The result has broad soft masses, almost no fine detail, visible brush edges around the coated area, and the paper texture reads through everything.

[Subject] as a multi-layer gum bichromate print. Broad soft tonal masses with very little fine detail, built from three pigment coatings so the colour is uneven and slightly mottled. Visible brush edges where the emulsion was coated by hand, heavy watercolour paper texture reading through the image. Muted earth palette, matte surface, no sharp edges anywhere.
