Didone High Contrast

Didone High Contrast example frame

Hairline thins against heavy stems with flat unbracketed serifs, set large and tight.

What it does

Firmin Didot and Giambattista Bodoni cut types around 1790 with extreme stroke contrast, perfectly vertical stress and flat serifs joining the stem at a right angle with no bracket. It requires smooth paper and good presswork because the hairlines break up on rough stock. Set small it is fragile and hard to read; set very large with tight tracking it became the permanent language of fashion mastheads, which is why Vogue still looks like 1790.

The prompt

[Subject] set in a Didone with extreme stroke contrast: hairline thins against heavy vertical stems, flat unbracketed serifs meeting at a right angle, perfectly vertical stress. Set very large with tight negative tracking, all caps, ranged centre. Nothing else on the page but generous white space. Sharp offset on smooth coated stock so the hairlines hold.

Replace [Subject] with what you are shooting. Everything else is deliberate: the gear, stock and lighting are what push a generator towards this look.
