Didone High Contrast
Hairline thins against heavy stems with flat unbracketed serifs, set large and tight.
What it does
Firmin Didot and Giambattista Bodoni cut types around 1790 with extreme stroke contrast, perfectly vertical stress and flat serifs joining the stem at a right angle with no bracket. It requires smooth paper and good presswork because the hairlines break up on rough stock. Set small it is fragile and hard to read; set very large with tight tracking it became the permanent language of fashion mastheads, which is why Vogue still looks like 1790.
