Solarisation

Partial tonal reversal with a bright Mackie line tracing every edge.

What it does

Man Ray and Lee Miller found it in the Paris darkroom in 1929 by fogging a print mid-development. Tones partially reverse, and a characteristic bright outline called the Mackie line appears wherever dark meets light. It is not an invert filter: only some tones flip, midtones behave unpredictably, and the effect is strongest at high-contrast boundaries. Faking it by inverting the whole image gives the wrong result and no Mackie line, which is the giveaway.
