The New Typography
Tschichold's 1928 programme: asymmetry, sans serif and photography, argued as a moral position.
What it does
Die neue Typographie set out rules rather than preferences: asymmetric arrangement instead of centred, sans serif as the only honest modern type, standardised DIN paper sizes, photography instead of drawn illustration, and heavy rules to organise the field. It predates the Swiss school by twenty years and is more combative. Tschichold later renounced the whole thing as too doctrinaire and returned to classical setting at Penguin, which is the most interesting fact about it.
