Stencil duplication in purple aniline, blurred and uneven, smelling of school corridors.

What it does

The spirit duplicator and the mimeograph produced most school handouts and early zines before photocopying was cheap. A stencil is cut by typewriter or stylus and ink pushed through it, so line quality is soft, letters fill in, and coverage varies across the sheet as the drum dries. The characteristic purple is aniline dye, which fades badly. Hand-drawn illustration and typewriter text sit side by side because both were cut on the same stencil.
