What it does

Benjamin Day's dot process gave cheap comics their flat tints. Roy Lichtenstein enlarged the dots to painting scale so the reproduction method itself became the content, and added thick black contour and primary flats. The rules are strict: dots are evenly spaced and perfectly regular, the black outline is uniform and heavy, and there is no tonal modelling anywhere, only flat areas and dot fields.

Heavy uniform black contour around every shape, flat primary red and yellow areas, and evenly spaced perfectly regular Ben-Day dots enlarged until individually obvious as the only means of tone. No modelling, no gradients, no shading. Slight misregistration of the dot layer against the outline. Printed on absorbent newsprint.
