Airbrush Illustration

Airbrush Illustration example frame

Seamless graduated tone with hard masked edges, the visual language of 1970s and 80s commercial art.

What it does

Before digital gradients, the airbrush gave perfectly smooth tone, and frisket masking gave razor-sharp edges beside it. That combination, soft graduation against a hard cut edge, is the signature. Hajime Sorayama's chrome and Syd Mead's concept work define the register: highly reflective surfaces, chrome and glass rendered as bands of graduated tone, and a highlight that is a hard-edged white shape rather than a soft glow.

The prompt

[Subject] as a 1980s airbrush illustration. Perfectly smooth graduated tone with no visible brush or grain, set against razor-sharp frisket-masked edges. Chrome and glass rendered as stacked bands of graduated reflection, specular highlights as hard-edged white shapes rather than soft glows. Deep saturated background gradient, magenta into indigo. Painted on illustration board.

Replace [Subject] with what you are shooting. Everything else is deliberate: the gear, stock and lighting are what push a generator towards this look.
