Window Light
A single window as key, camera on the shadow side, turning a room into thought, duration and a Vermeer-like interior life.
What it does
Window light is a single, large, often north-facing aperture as the key, with the camera usually on the shadow side so the face turns into the source. Emotionally it is thought, time passing, and interior life: people look as if they have been in the room for hours. It is Vermeer before it is cinema. Sven Nykvist made window light the spiritual weather of Bergman's late films. Łukasz Żal and Ryszard Lenczewski built Ida on windowed convents and cafés, the 1.33 frame a second window. Robbie Ryan flooded The Favourite with dirty natural windows so court intrigue stayed physically cold. Roger Deakins has used a window as a sole alibi from The Shawshank Redemption to The Reader. Use it for letters, grief, interviews with a soul, and period rooms. Do not fight it with a hard fill from the opposite side, or you will have cancelled the very direction that made the shot feel true.
