Diffuse the image to soften fine contrast and spread highlights while preserving a deliberately focused subject.
What it does
Soft-focus diffusion modifies the image through filters, nets or optical design, reducing fine contrast and often spreading bright highlights into surrounding areas. It is different from accidentally missing focus: a diffused image can retain a clearly defined eye beneath a softer overall rendering. Geoffrey Unsworth’s photography in Superman uses diffusion as part of a luminous, romantic treatment of faces and light. His work in Cabaret shows how softness can also coexist with a troubled, theatrical atmosphere rather than simple prettiness. Filter type, strength, lens, exposure and the brightness of practical lamps all change the result. Test the relationship between halation and dark areas instead of assuming one filter strength looks identical everywhere. Avoid it when tiny text or forensic detail must remain crisp, or when uncontrolled highlight bloom drains a low-contrast scene of necessary shape.
