Practical Lighting

Working lamps in the frame do the keying, so interiors feel lived-in, a little cruel, and occupied rather than dressed.
What it does
Practical lighting puts working lamps in the frame and lets them, or their hidden twins, do the keying. Table lamps, overhead fluorescents, television spill, fridge light: the set becomes the rig. Emotionally it is lived-in and slightly cruel, because real bulbs fall off fast and leave corners unredeemed. People look as if they went home, not as if they arrived on a mark. Jeff Cronenweth and David Fincher built The Social Network and Gone Girl out of desks, laptops and household fixtures until the architecture felt like a trap. Roger Deakins packed Blade Runner 2049 with practicals so a digital future still had wattage. Use it for contemporary interiors, surveillance tones, and any scene that should feel found. Do not use it as an excuse for muddy faces: if the practical cannot carry exposure, cheat it from the same direction, or you will have atmosphere and no performance.
