What it does

Mixed colour temperature lets two white points coexist: a 5600K window against 2700K lamps, or sodium streetlight against cool moonlight, without correcting either back to a single grey. Emotionally it stages two worlds in one cut: inside versus outside, home versus city, the body versus the institution. Emmanuel Lubezki left dirty fluorescents against daylight in Children of Men so the future felt maintained rather than designed. Roger Deakins mixed sodium, LED and tungsten in Skyfall's Shanghai and in 1917's night interiors until geography had a temperature. Greig Fraser's Gotham in The Batman is a war between sodium vapour and cold wet moonlight. Use it for thresholds, kitchens at dusk, and any city night. Do not correct it all to 3200K in the grade, and do not use a single white balance when the scene's meaning is the clash.
