Italian Giallo cinema transformed pulpy murder mysteries into delirious, chromatic nightmares through the unapologetic use of intensely saturated primary colour gels, such as vivid crimsons, cobalt blues, and toxic greens. Combined with aggressive zoom lenses, sweeping baroque camera moves, and dreamlike production design, Giallo abandons naturalistic logic in favour of intoxicating, feverish psychological terror. It externalises suppressed desires, psychosexual trauma, and eroticised dread into pure sensory spectacle. Luciano Tovoli created the pinnacle of chromatic horror in Dario Argento's Suspiria, flooding art academy corridors with custom-gelled carbon arcs and deep primary hues to evoke an operatic fairy tale nightmare. Mario Bava laid the foundation in Blood and Black Lace, pioneering saturated polychromatic lighting schemes to elevate brutal stalker narratives into high art.
