Drop Cap and Marginalia

A large initial anchoring the opening, with notes set in the outer margin.

What it does

The manuscript tradition places commentary in the margin around the text rather than at the foot, and opens with a versal initial dropped into the text block. The initial must align optically to the baseline of the line it finishes on and sit flush to the text block, and marginal notes must be set smaller with their own baseline so they align to the main text at intervals rather than drifting.

The prompt

A page about [Subject] with a large drop cap and marginal notes. The initial capital dropped four lines into the text block, aligned flush left and sitting exactly on the baseline of the fourth line, printed in red.
