Horizontals, verticals and the three primaries only, with asymmetry doing all the work.

What it does

Theo van Doesburg and Piet Mondrian published De Stijl from 1917 on a strict programme: only horizontal and vertical lines, only red, yellow, blue plus black, white and grey. Van Doesburg's later introduction of the diagonal caused a genuine rupture with Mondrian. Balance is achieved by unequal areas held in tension rather than by symmetry, which is the difficult part and the reason most imitations look like a Mondrian tea towel rather than a composition.

The prompt

A De Stijl composition for [Subject]. Only horizontal and vertical black rules of varying thickness dividing the field into unequal rectangles. Fill a small number of those rectangles with flat primary red, yellow and blue, leaving most white. No diagonals, no curves, no gradients, no type inside the coloured blocks. Balance achieved through unequal areas in tension. Flat offset print on smooth white.
