Soft light is a source large relative to the subject, often through silk, grid cloth, overcast sky or bounce, so shadow edges feather and skin holds detail. Emotionally it is intimacy, memory and a permission to be unguarded. Faces look considered rather than caught. Sven Nykvist made Bergman's close-ups in Persona and later Fanny and Alexander feel like thought itself, the light never picking a fight with the actor. Emmanuel Lubezki's The Tree of Life bathes childhood in soft natural skylight so recollection feels physically gentle even when the family is not. Bradford Young's Arrival wraps Amy Adams in soft, dim, almost ecclesiastical grey. Use it for grief, love, and any scene that should feel remembered. Do not use it when the script needs bite, heat, or the graphic violence of a hard cut between light and dark.
