What it does
Foreground depth layering, often referred to in dialogue scenes as a dirty single, intentionally places an out-of-focus object, such as an actor's shoulder, architectural pillars, door frames, or foliage, in the immediate foreground while keeping the subject sharp in the mid-ground. This physical layering breaks the flat plane of the screen, creating rich dimensional depth and an atmospheric sense of physical presence. Emotionally, it transforms the viewer into an eavesdropper or voyeur, heightening spatial intimacy, secrecy, or psychological entanglement between characters. Gordon Willis relied heavily on dirty singles in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather, shooting over dark silhouetted shoulders to underscore clandestine criminal conspiracies. Christopher Doyle used foreground layering with sublime poetry in Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love, framing lovers past blurry lamps, banisters, and rain-streaked glass. When not to use it: Avoid foreground layering in corporate instructional videos or direct, objective confrontations where obstructive visual clutter distracts from clean communication.
